Home Safety Checklist for Seniors Living Independently

A safe home helps maintain independence and peace of mind. Use this checklist to reduce fall risks and create a safer environment for yourself or a loved one:

Living Areas:

✅ Remove loose rugs or secure them with non-slip backing.

✅ Keep walkways clear of clutter and furniture.

✅ Ensure all rooms have adequate lighting.

✅ Install handrails on stairs and in hallways.

Bathroom:

✅ Install grab bars near the toilet and in the tub/shower.

✅ Use a non-slip bath mat inside and outside the shower.

✅ Consider a raised toilet seat and shower chair.

Kitchen:

✅ Keep frequently used items at waist level.

✅ Use step stools with handrails—no chairs or unstable surfaces!

✅ Clean up spills immediately to avoid slipping.

Bedroom:

✅ Place a lamp within easy reach of the bed.

✅ Ensure the bed height allows for safe entry and exit.

✅ Keep a phone or emergency alert nearby.

Taking time to assess your home—even room by room—can make all the difference. Safety starts with awareness, and the right tools can support aging in place with confidence.
